I get it – this is your first half or full and you’re really proud you’re taking this on, but you don’t have to give into the corporate greed.
First, if you want to say you’re training for one…everyone can respect that. However, if you’re wearing the Ironman gear that says “Ironman 70.3 Augusta in Training,” you might want reevaluate your wardrobe.
The only clothing that is acceptable to wear is anything related to you finishing the race, such as the finisher shirt you get in your swag bag at the expo. Don’t go buying this “Ironman in Training” stuff from Ironman. It’s just a straight cash grab; they saw the opportunity to make some more money and put merchandise out there. There’s a sucker born every minute and that was the demographic they went after with this product line.
I never actually thought I’d see anyone wearing this stuff when it first dropped, but I’ve run into five people wearing it since then. Remember, it’s only okay to wear triathlon clothing you’ve earned by completing your race. How silly would you feel if you have all this “Ironman in Training” gear you bought and ended up with a DNF? I imagine that wouldn’t be a fun story to tell when people ask you about that shirt you’re wearing.
